Overview

the park is divided into East and West sections. Two rivers, which are the Athi and Tsavo River converge at the park which then becomes the Galana River. The park is mainly a grassland which easily thrives due to the Hot and dry climate of the Region, temperatures fluctuates between 310 c during the day and 200 c during the night.


Who surrounds Tsavo?

The Kamba community are the major inhabitants of the region surrounding Tsavo east National park. The Kamba community are believed to have migrated from Mount Kilimanjaro, and settled between the Taita and Mbooni hills and were initially long distance traders who indulged in the trade of ivory, beads, slaves, honey, bee wax and skins with the Arabs at the coast. Currently the Kamba have adopted other economic activities, such as bee Keeping, agriculture etc.

Natural Attractions

The Park is home to the big five which include, The Lion, Black Rhino, Elephants, cape Buffaloes and the leopard. Its vastness in terms of area cover enables and creates a good ecosystem for the Big five to thrive and thus creates a balanced ecosystem. The park is also home to a variety of wild animals such as the, Senegal bush baby, bushbuck, caracal, African wild cat, African Dormouse, south east African cheetah, bush duiker and many more which can be easily spotted during drives in the park. The park is also home to over 500 species of birds have been recorded which included birds such as, ostriches, buzzards, starlings, weaver birds and many other different kind of species of birds.

The Mudanda Rock

Acting as a water catchment area for the Aruba Dam which is also located inside the park, thus providing a great and spectacular view of the wildlife while they drink and cool themselves with the water.

The Yatta Plateau

Renowned for its massive expanse, the yatta plateau remains as the world’s longest flow of lava, with over 300 km in length with a vegetation cover of shrubs and trees which are visible as you visit the plateau.

The Lugard Falls

getting its name from “Fredric Lugard” the lugard falls is located along the Galana River where the river passes through a volcanic rock thus creating a series of rapids and falls as the water flows.

The Aruba Dam

Spanning from the Voi River, the Aruba Dam is one of the spectacular and strategic locations to have a magical view of different species of wildlife and birds.

Climate

General Overview

Visitors to Tsavo East can expect a hot, dry climate. The average temperature fluctuates between 31°C/88°F during the day and 20°C/68°F at nighttime. Rainfall peaks in April and November during the long and short rains, respectively. Rain tends to fall as short heavy showers..

The Dry season months are the coolest. Days are full of sunshine and there is very little rain.

June & July – Days are normally sunny. Average afternoon temperatures are around 29°C/84°F.

August & September – The average September temperature is 30°C/86°F, although it does get much hotter. Temperatures during the day escalate prior to the rain.

The ‘short rains’ and the ‘long rains’ are separated by a drier couple of months in January and February. Road conditions are at their worst in April and May.

October, November & December – October usually signals the beginning of the rains. November is one of the wettest months of the year. Rain generally doesn’t last all day, but expect afternoon storms. During daylight hours the average temperature is 32°C/90°F.

January & February – These months see a break between the short and long rains. The exact duration of this dry period is difficult to predict. February is reliably the hottest month – the average in the afternoon is 33°C/91°F with higher peaks.

March, April & May – The long rains usually begin in late March. It hardly ever rains all day, but fleeting afternoon showers should be expected. April receives the most rainfall. Temperatures in the afternoon are about 32°C/90°F.
